Founded as Anglovaal Portland Cement Company Limited in 1934, AfriSam is today the leading black-controlled construction materials group in southern Africa. The company has operations in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland and produces over four million tons of cement annually. AfriSam has six cement production facilities, eight cement depots, 16 quarries and aggregate operations, 40 readymix
concrete plants and a Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) milling plant. The company also has a 62.5 percent interest in Tanzania-based and listed, Tanga Cement Company.

History: AfriSam (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd was founded as Anglo Alpha Cement Limited, changing its name to Alpha (Pty) Ltd in 1996 and later to Holcim (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd in 2004. The historic sale of the former Holcim (SA) (Pty) Ltd to the black-led AfriSam Consortium in 2007 resulted in the birth of the new brand, AfriSam.
Branches: AfriSam’s Shared Service Centre is located in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, with manufacturing plants and administration offices in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland.

AfriSam’s ‘Women in Mining’ is a skills development programme specifically aimed at developing women and providing them with opportunities for various careers in the mining and construction sector.
Recently, AfriSam was awarded the prestigious Mail & Guardian Greening the Future Award in the category of energy efficiency and carbon management. The judges singled out AfriSam for setting new benchmarks in the construction industry. In 2010, AfriSam won the Nedbank Capital Green Mining Award in the environmental category for its CO2 footprint reduction initiatives.
