Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the largest airports authority in Africa, owns and operates South Africa’s 10 principal airports comprising the three major international airports at Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The other six airports are functionally domestic and national; Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, East London, George, Kimberley and Upington while the company has a 35-year concession to operate Pilanesberg Airport near Sun City.
Apart from providing world-class, secure infrastructure for airlines to move people and goods to desired destinations, ACSA is proactive in the promotion of tourism and the facilitation of economic growth, job creation as well as protection of the environment.
The company was created in 1993 by an Act of Parliament. ACSA was one of the first stateowned companies to be privatised when Aeroporti di Roma paid R819-million for 20 percent of the company’s shares to become the South African government’s strategic equity partner in ACSA through a competitive bid. Aeroporti di Roma’s shares have since been sold to the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).
Since it commenced operations, ACSA has paid over R1-billion in dividends to its shareholders. The company invested about R4-billion in capital expenditure over the last six-year period, and it is projected that it will invest significantly more over the period leading to 2010. While the main source of revenue continues to be aeronautical, non-aeronautical revenue from commercial activities such as retail, property and advertising has grown, as at year end 2006, to about 45 percent of revenue. Together, the 10 airports handle more than 270 000 aircarft landings and 16.5 million departing passengers annually.
The company’s efforts to create world-class airports backed by world-class service standards have also been acknowledged internationally and achievements at the company’s three flagship enterprises, OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), Cape Town (CIA) and Durban (DIA) International Airports, have been recognised in the AETRA awards programme. In February 2005, ACSA was recognised as the Top Performer for the Year 2004 in the transport sector by Top 300 National Companies.
