Top Women in Business and Government seeks to identify South Africa's winning companies leading the path of gender empowerment and institutional transformation in this regard.

Did you know that only researched, qualified and gender-empowered organisations can be featured in Top Women? In other words, no matter how big, how old, how successful the organisation is - if you are not gender empowered, you cannot be featured in Top Women. Over 2000 organisations participate in our annual research survey; developing one of the country's most comprehensive and definitive resources of gender-based statistics.

We now invite you to participate in our research process. Not only will this allow us to develop a network of like-minded, empowered and diversified organisations, it will allow you to benchmark your gender-empowerment policies.

This self-administered research document has been developed to assess workplace equality for women in South Africa today. The document is simple, user-friendly and will only take a few minutes to complete. By completing and submitting this form, you certify that the information given is correct, you also agree to be contacted for final phase auditing and related publishing purposes. Top

Top Women in Business and Government seeks to identify South Africa's winning companies leading the path of gender empowerment and institutional transformation in this regard.

The Top Women in Business and Government publication is unique in that it carries comprehensive, accurate, valid and up-to-date information on thousands of businesses that empower women, that are powered by women and the gender initiatives being done by these organisations across South Africa.

Companies need to qualify to be listed, to profile or advertise in Top Women in Business and Government.

They are required to meet a particular set of strict entry criteria for which points are awarded.

Should a company, organisation or government department/agency not meet the entry criteria, they are NOT permitted to book space in the publication.

The entry qualification questionnaire has been compiled in conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch School of Business.

The entry criteria include the following:

A particular score must be achieved in order for a company to be listed.

All companies need to have an annual turnover of no less than R5-million, however, should a particular company meet or exceed all other criteria and have an annual turnover of less than this amount, they may be listed at the discretion of the publisher.

The higher the female representation in a company or larger the number of female shareholders, particularly at an executive level, the more points the company is awarded.

Gender equity policies above and beyond what is required by law, as well as the length of time they have been implemented wins that company more points.

Plans to institute the aforementioned policies over the next few years will earn that company additional points, with the sooner the date of implementation, the higher the score.

If the said company employs a quota or target system to ensure an equitable percentage of women in the workplace, more points are earned.

Special provisions made by a company for the representation or skillsdevelopment of women i.e. forums or glass ceiling effect, will earn that company points.

Procurement sourced from Gender Empowered enterprises to ensure women being mainstreamed into the economy will earn that company points.

Special CSI Programmes focusing on female development at grassroots level will earn that company points.

Organisation Awards

Top Gender Empowered Company: Mining, Engineering and Construction
Top Gender Empowered Company: Science, Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology
Top Gender Empowered Company: Transport
Top Gender Empowered Company: Financial Services
Top Gender Empowered Company: ICT
Top Gender Empowered Company: Business Support Services

These awards go to the companies that demonstrate the most success in tackling and improving gender empowerment in their respective sector. Important factors are measurable and accountable leadership that is committed to developing women in the company and the per capita expenditure on training, education and development of women.

  • At least 33.33% of overall staff and at least 25% of overall middle and senior management are female.
  • Turnover per annum is over R50 million and the company has at least 20 employees.
  • The company has been in operation for at least eight years.
  • The company has a gender equity policy in place and their CSI initiatives demonstrate the company’s commitment to gender empowerment.

Top Gender Empowered Company: Emergent Companies and SMMEs
This award goes to the company that demonstrates the highest level of gender empowerment. Important factors are measurable and accountable leadership that is committed to developing women in the company and the per capita expenditure on training, education and development of women.

  • Turnover per annum is between R3 and R25 million and the company has at least 5 employees.
  • The company has been in operation for at least two years.
  • The owner is actively involved in the management of the company.
  • The company has policies, skills development programmes and/or CSI initiatives that demonstrate their commitment to gender empowerment.

An overall winner of Top Gender Empowered Company will be selected from the winners of the seven company awards.

Top Gender Empowered National, Provincial or Local Government Department
This award goes to the government department that that demonstrates the highest level of gender empowerment. An important factor is measurable and accountable leadership that is committed to developing women in the company.

  • At least 33.3% of overall staff and at least 33.3% of management must be female.
  • The department met their gender empowerment key performance indicators (KPIs) and targets for service delivery, within budget.
  • Vision for the department going forward.

Top Gender Empowered Government Agency or Parastatal
This award goes to the government department that that demonstrates the highest level of gender empowerment. An important factor is measurable and accountable leadership that is committed to developing women in the company.

  • At least 33.3% of overall staff and at least 33.3% of management must be female.
  • The department met their gender empowerment key performance indicators (KPIs) and targets for service delivery, within budget.
  • Vision for the organisation going forward.

Individual Awards

Top Woman Entrepreneur
This award goes to the person who can demonstrate her commitment to gender empowerment both within and outside the company that she started.

  • The company must employ more than 5 people and have a turnover that is greater than R5 million per annum.
  • The company must show significant year-on-year growth (compared to sector average), underpinned by strong financial performance.
  • The company has been in operation for at least two years.

Top Young Woman Entrepreneur
This award goes to the person (aged 40 years or less) who can demonstrate her commitment to gender empowerment both within and outside the company that she started.

  • The company must employ more than 5 people and have a turnover that is greater than R5 million per annum.
  • The company must show significant year-on-year growth (compared to sector average).
  • The company has been in operation for at least two years.

Top Woman Executive
This award goes to the person who works for a large company who can demonstrate her commitment to gender empowerment.

  • The executive works for a company that has more than 50 employees, a turnover greater than R50 million per annum and has been in operation for more than eight years.
  • The executive has been in a senior management position for at least five years, has a proven track record of achievements and has contributed to a changed perception of women in the workplace.
  • The executive has contributed to escalating the level and quality of gender economic empowerment within the workplace.

Top Woman in the Public Sector
This award goes to the person working in the public sector who can demonstrate her commitment to gender empowerment.

  • The woman holds a senior management sector
  • The woman has worked in the public sector for at least two years.
  • Achievements within the workplace to escalate the level and quality of gender economic empowerment.c

Top Woman-owned Company
This award goes to the company owner whose manner in which they do business demonstrates their commitment to gender empowerment.

  • The company is 100% woman-owned
  • The company has more than 10 employees and an annual turnover greater than R35 million.
  • At least 33.3% of overall staff and at least 33.3% of management must be female.

An overall winner of Top Woman of the Year in Business will be selected from the winners of the four individual awards – our main award.

In addition, Topco Media will present an honorary award: the Top Women Lifetime Achievement award, to a woman who has dedicated her life to the upliftment of women and gender empowerment.
